Have the Colorado Avalanche officially hit the panic button. With a horrendous slide continuing, most recently shut out by Tampa Bay, the Avs may be about to throw head coach Tony Granato to the wolves. A rumour out of New York is flying, that former St. Louis Blues headmaster Joel Quennville is about to arrive in the mile high city and take over the reins of the struggling Avalanche.
While it seems hard to believe, the Avalanche are mired in a rather dire situation. With all the offence that they can offer up, they're having a terrible time of scoring goals. And Pierre Lacroix is known for his dramatic moves at the trade deadline, so it's not inconceivable that he'd change the coach instead of the roster.
Things are wound rather tight in Colorado these days, Granato was involved in a shouting match on the bench last week. The team is on a losing skid at home that has the locals more than a little worried and things are going downhill fast for the Avalanche. Would changing the coach turn the season around? Not sure it's the best course, but it wouldn't be the first time a coach has been sacrificed to get a well compensated line up to perform.
With some key games coming up shortly, Lacroix may feel it's his last card to play to get the player's attention.
