It had been nine games since Jarome Iginla had netted a point for the Calgary Flames, causing a bit of worry in Cowtown over their marquee player and his production this year so far.
Wednesday night Flames fans could put aside their concerns for the time being, as Iginla broke out of the slump with a three point night in New Jersey. The Flames captain powered his squad to a 4-1 victory over the Devils and with the win took over first place in the Northwest Division with 38 points, two more over the Vancouver Canucks who don’t see action again until Friday night. The Flames wrapped up a grueling five game road trip with a 3-1-1 record.
Iginla scored two goals and picked up an assist on the way to the victory as the Flames made the best of their chances, while goaltender Phillipe Sauve played remarkably in the nets to turn aside the Devils opportunities time and time again. Sauve faced 32 shots on the night, including a period of time where the Flames were outshot 13-2 in the first period. His ability to turn aside all but one went a fair way towards securing the win for the Flames. Calgary's success came on the power play as they went 3 for 4 with the man advantage, the Devils could only muster one goal on ten opportunities, which must be a cause for concern for coach Larry Robinson.
The Flames return home to wait for the Ottawa Senators to come to town on Saturday night, a much anticipated Hockey Night in Canada match up. The Flames will benefit from facing a Senators team that will have played the Canucks on Friday night, in what promises to be an exciting match up as well.
By Sunday if things work out in the Flames favor, they could have a four point lead over their divisional rivals. And with the captain back on the scoring summaries once again, the chances of that happening increase immensely.
