Rookie of the Month for January

February 3-- Perhaps they should just rename this the Ovechkin award. For the second month in a row, Alexander Ovechkin has been selected as the rookie of the month.

The Capitals winger, who led the league in scoring for the month of January with 21 points in 14 games, is quickly reaching legend status. His remarkable production levels, especially on a team where he's frequently the only offensive threat are bringing much attention his way of late. In January he accounted for 28% of all Capitals scoring, such is his importance to his team.

In addition to receiving the rookie of the month award, Ovechkin also picked up the offensive player award for January, which considering his offensive output is not particularly surprising.

Since he's off to another strong start in February and the league will shut down for a couple of weeks for the Olympics, don't be surprised if Ovechkin has a threepeat come the 2nd of March!
