Comeback Tuesday

Two of the game’s higher profile players made their return to action on Tuesday night, one coming back from an injury suffered in January, and the other returning from quasi retirement of almost one year.

Sidney Crosby was back in the Penguins line up on Tuesday, six and a half weeks after he was sidelined with what was called a high ankle sprain. While he had a little rust on his scoring touch, his play making skills suffered no such problem, Crosby set up the first Penguins goal of the night to set the Penguins off on the way to their 2-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

He had number of scoring opportunities through game from the opening shift and seemed to effortlessly return to the game after the January 18th injury.

Also back in form for the Pens was goaltender Marc Andre Fleury who made his first return to the Pens on Sunday and picked things up from their to earn the shutout, having stared down 66 of 68 shooters in the last two games.

While the Penguins celebrated the return of two more key ingredients to their team’s success a reunion was also taking place in the Rocky Mountains.

The Colorado Avalanche welcomed back long time favourite Peter Forsberg to the fold, as the Swedish star made his first appearance in the NHL since his exit from league play last playoff season.

Forsberg who has suffered a number of foot related problems over the years, at one time had intimated that he was done for the year, but then changed his plans and ended up signed with the Avalanche for the rest of the season and any potential playoff games that may come their way.

His first game back didn’t exhibit any side effects from his foot travails and while he didn’t end up on the scoring sheet in his first game, it seems that just his presence on the roster had taken the Avs play to a higher level.

Since Forsberg signed on for a stretch run the Avs have won four in a row, and his decision to suit up probably hasn’t come a minute too soon. With Ryan Smyth out for an undetermined period of time due to his violent run in with a glass partition holder on Sunday and Marek Svatos out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL, the Avs were getting a little thin in the depth department.

While his team mates are no doubt quite happy to see him back in an Avalanche uniform, it seems that the fans are even more enthusiastic. With the announcement that Forsberg had come back to the scene of some of his finest NHL glories, the Avs sold 1400 additional seats to Tuesday night’s game.

So far for Forsberg there are no goals yet, but there is lots of adulation and a little monetary compensation for the Avs with his return.

The Avs continued their winning ways with Forsberg back on the ice, a 2-1 victory over the struggling Vancouver Canucks, considering the aim of bringing him back to Colorado is to help get the Avs into the playoffs, it would seem that simply putting on the skates is for the moment good enough, though they’ll no doubt welcome some goals as he gets back into a groove and the Avs continue to move up the standings.
